Simon de Montfort and his baronial forces besieged Rochester Castle before Lewes. The castle was royalist and controlled river communications. The barons burned part of the town before Henry III marched to relieve it, causing de Montfort to withdraw. The siege was indecisive but demonstrated baronial control of Kent approaches.
