History & Significance

Major-General Thomas Mytton conducted the systematic Parliamentary reduction of north Welsh Royalist garrisons in 1646 after Naseby. Mytton moved from castle to castle demanding surrender and investing those that refused. His campaign covered Flintshire, Denbighshire, and Caernarfonshire. Several minor skirmishes occurred as Royalist forces attempted to break out or relieve invested garrisons. Mytton role in reducing north Wales made him the dominant Parliamentary commander in the region.
