History & Significance

Compton Wynyates, the magnificent Tudor mansion of the Earl of Northampton, was garrisoned by Royalists. Parliament took it in 1644 and held it briefly; it was then retaken and changed hands again. The house survived and remains one of England's finest Tudor mansions.
