History & Significance

Following the Heworth Moor affray, the Percy-Neville feud continued with armed clashes across Yorkshire. At Stamford Bridge — site of the famous 1066 battle — a confrontation between the Neville and Percy retinues resulted in the capture of Thomas Lord Egremont, who was imprisoned in Newgate. His imprisonment did not end the feud; he later escaped and joined the Lancastrian cause. The clash illustrates how the great northern families' private wars were rehearsals for the civil war to come.
