History & Significance

Fort Augustus, one of the chain of government forts built to control the Highlands after the 1715 rising, was captured by the Jacobites in March 1746 during the Highland campaign before Culloden. The garrison surrendered after Jacobite artillery breached the walls — the magazine then exploded, killing several of the garrison. The fort's capture gave the Jacobites control of the Great Glen and secured their communications between Inverness and the western Highlands.
