History & Significance

Anglesey rose again in the Second Civil War (1648), following the wider Presbyterian-Royalist coalition's revolt against Parliament. The island's gentry rallied for the King and reoccupied Beaumaris briefly. Parliamentary forces under Colonel George Twisleton suppressed the rising and Beaumaris surrendered for the second time in October 1648. The island remained restive; Colonel John Jones (one of the future regicides) was installed as governor.
