The Battle

History & Significance

Badenoch — the MacPherson country in upper Strathspey — was one of the most thoroughly pacified areas after Culloden. Government columns under various officers burned townships, seized cattle and arrested men found with weapons. Ewen MacPherson of Cluny, whose clan had fought at Culloden, evaded capture by hiding in the famous 'Cage' — a concealed dwelling on the side of Ben Alder — for nine years. He sheltered Prince Charles there during the fugitive period. The pacification of Badenoch destroyed the subsistence economy of the MacPherson clan and reduced dozens of townships to ashes.
