History & Significance

Hengistbury Head was one of the most important pre-Roman trading ports in Britain, with imports from Gaul and the Mediterranean. Its capture gave Rome control of the Solent entrance and a secure supply base for the southwest campaign. The Classis Britannica could operate from here to support Vespasian inland advance. Archaeological evidence shows a dramatic decline in occupation after the conquest.
