History & Significance

On his return from crusade and captivity, Richard I besieged Nottingham Castle which was held by the sheriff in Prince John's interest. The castle was the last to hold out against Richard after John's rebellion collapsed. Richard personally supervised the siege with catapults. When the garrison realized the king himself was present they surrendered. Richard held a forest court at Clipstone afterwards.
