History & Significance

The assault on Stanwick was the climax of the Brigantian war. Wheeler excavated a dramatic scene at the Tofts entrance — a scattered skeleton with a sword lying nearby, interpreted as a defender killed in the assault. The scale of Stanwick earthworks (six miles of ramparts) suggests a major engagement. Venutius disappears from history after the fall; the Brigantes were incorporated into the province.
