Welsh lords of Gwent conducted armed resistance against early Norman penetration into south-east Wales in the late 1060s and 1070s. The Normans had established themselves at Monmouth and Chepstow and were pressing westward. Welsh fighting methods using woodland and hill ambush tactics made Norman progress costly. The Gwent lords maintained partial independence longer than most Welsh kingdoms facing direct Norman assault.
