History & Significance

A major Cromwellian earthwork citadel was constructed at Perth in 1652 to dominate the gateway to the Highlands and control central Scotland. Perth fort was one of the five great Cromwellian forts in Scotland. It housed a substantial English garrison that controlled access to the Highland passes and overawed the central Lowlands. The fort was demolished at the Restoration in 1660.
