History & Significance

A battle near Grosmont on 20 August 1404 in which a Welsh raiding force was defeated by Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick. The Welsh then moved south and fought again at Craig y Dorth near Mitchel Troy — this time winning. The seesaw fighting around Grosmont and Usk in 1404-05 shows the contested nature of south-east Wales in this period. Note: a separate battle of Campstone Hill/Grosmont in 1405 (already seeded) is distinct from this 1404 action.

Forces Involved

English (Beauchamp): c. 600–1,200 men. Welsh raiders: c. 800–1,500 men.
