The Battle

History & Significance

The upper reaches of Glengarry in Lochaber, along the River Garry running west toward Loch Garry and Loch Quoich, were MacDonell of Glengarry territory. The clan had been among the most committed Jacobites — MacDonell of Glengarry had brought his clan to Glenfinnan and fought throughout the '45. After Culloden, government columns penetrating Glengarry from Fort Augustus encountered armed MacDonell resistance in the upper glen. Clansmen fired on the burning parties from the hillsides. Several government soldiers were killed or wounded in these ambushes. The rugged terrain made full pacification impossible for weeks after Culloden.
