Rising foiled before it began. Holberry sentenced to four years rigorous imprisonment. His death in prison made him a Chartist martyr. Sheffield Chartism subsequently adopted peaceful methods.
The Battle

History & Significance

Sheffield Chartists under Samuel Holberry planned an armed rising for January 1840 as part of a coordinated national insurrection. The plan was betrayed to the government by an informer. Holberry and his associates were arrested before the rising began. Holberry died in prison in 1842.
