History & Significance

Llywelyn ap Gruffudd routed Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn of Powys at Garthmyl near Montgomery in early 1257. The battle, called "Trwst Llywelyn" (the Tumult of Llywelyn) in Welsh sources, was part of Llywelyn's sweep through mid and south Wales that year. By the end of 1257 he controlled almost all of Wales and proclaimed himself Prince of Wales. The Treaty of Montgomery in 1267 formalised English recognition of this title.
