History & Significance

Colonel William Livingstone led a column of government dragoons through Badenoch in the months following the Battle of Cromdale to pacify the central Highlands. The MacPhersons of Cluny and other clans still in arms were pursued through this remote upland country. Livingstone's dragoons burned townships, drove off cattle and pressed clan leaders to submit. The pacification through Badenoch was brutal and methodical. Several minor skirmishes occurred as armed clansmen defended their townships. Cluny MacPherson eventually submitted, though he later rose again in 1745.
