The Battle

History & Significance

Caesar Constantius Chlorus assembled a major fleet and attacked Britain in two columns. Asclepiodotus, the Praetorian Prefect, landed in Hampshire in fog (bypassing Allectus's fleet) and defeated and killed Allectus in a pitched battle, probably near Silchester. Frankish mercenaries who had fled the battle were saved from looting London only by Constantius's timely arrival by sea. A medallion from Trier shows Constantius being greeted as liberator at London's gate. The ten-year Britannic Empire was over.

Casualties & Losses

Allectus killed; Frankish mercenaries massacred at London
