The skirmish at Grantham on 13 May 1643 was one of Oliver Cromwell\'s earliest independent cavalry actions and an early demonstration of his military ability. Commanding around 12 troops of cavalry, he engaged a larger Royalist force and drove them from the field. Cromwell\'s ability to keep his cavalry under control after the charge — unlike most Civil War horse — was already evident. The action confirmed Parliamentary control of the Lincolnshire corridor and was an early step in Cromwell\'s rise to military prominence.
