The Battle

History & Significance

The Earldom of Ross pressed northward into Mackay territory in the mid-fourteenth century exploiting the disruption caused by the Bruce-Balliol conflicts. Ross raiding parties struck into Sutherland and challenged Mackay authority in the contested eastern marches of Sutherland. The Ross raids represented the southernmost clan threatening Mackay from the east as Sutherland threatened from the south.
