The Battle

History & Significance

When Clodius Albinus stripped the Wall garrison to march to Gaul against Septimius Severus, the Maeatae and Caledonians immediately exploited the gap. They crossed the Wall in force, raiding south through the frontier zone and as far as the Tyne valley. Cassius Dio records the north was devastated. Multiple forts show destruction layers precisely dated to this period — Corbridge, Vindolanda, Carlisle, and several milecastles.
