History & Significance

Angus Og MacDonald secured Dunaverty Castle at the southernmost tip of Kintyre in 1311 as part of the Bruce campaign in the west. Dunaverty commanded the Mull of Kintyre passage and controlled access to and from Ireland. Control of Dunaverty gave MacDonalds a strategic position of enormous importance for communications with the Irish MacDonald territories in Antrim.
