History & Significance

Surrey was predominantly Parliamentary but subject to Royalist cavalry raids from Hampshire. Guildford was raided by Royalist horse in 1643 but Parliamentary forces were able to maintain control of the county. Surrey's Parliamentary commitment was important in maintaining the supply chain to Waller's southern army.
