History & Significance

Robert Bruce retook Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1318, then repulsed Edward II's attempt to besiege it back in 1319. While Edward besieged Berwick, Bruce sent a raiding force under Moray and Douglas deep into Yorkshire to threaten Queen Isabella — resulting in the Battle of Myton. Edward had to abandon the siege. Berwick remaining in Scottish hands was a major strategic victory.

Forces Involved

Scottish besiegers: c. 6,000–10,000. English garrison/relief: c. 1,000–2,000.
