Throughout the strategic stand-off before Sheriffmuir, Argyll's dragoons maintained an active cavalry screen south of Stirling, preventing Jacobite intelligence-gathering and disrupting any attempt to outflank the Forth position. These patrol engagements — skirmishes between small cavalry parties — were an important part of the campaign that has been largely overlooked in favour of the main battle. Argyll's aggression with his cavalry was disproportionate to his small numbers and helped disguise his weakness from Mar's much larger army.
