Plean Cottages is a post-medieval palisaded enclosure located in Stirlingshire, Scotland, situated approximately 350 metres south-south-east of Plean village. The monument comprises a defensive or functional timber-palisade structure typical of the 16th to 18th centuries, a period when such fortified farmsteads and domestic enclosures were constructed throughout central Scotland. The site is protected as a scheduled monument under Historic Environment Scotland reference SM6480.
The enclosure sits on bedrock of the Clackmannan Group, sedimentary rocks formed during the Westphalian geological period of the Carboniferous era. These local stone foundations would have provided a stable base for the substantial timber posts required to erect the defensive palisade walls. The surrounding Stirlingshire landscape, with its mix of agricultural land and proximity to the Forth valley, was home to numerous similar fortified settlements during the post-medieval period, reflecting the region's strategic importance and persistent security concerns.
