The Antonine Wall is a Roman frontier defence work constructed during the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius in the mid-second century AD, approximately 143 to 163 AD. This turf-built rampart, stretching across central Scotland from the Forth to the Clyde, represents Rome's northernmost land frontier and superseded Hadrian's Wall as the empire's primary defensive line in Britain. The structure at Seabegs comprised a substantial earthwork with a ditch on its northern face, typical of the wall's construction throughout its thirty-nine-mile length. Archaeological examination has revealed it to be substantially preserved in places, with surviving remains including both the turf superstructure and underlying foundation, making it an important witness to Roman military engineering and occupation practices in northern Britain.
