The Antonine Wall is a Roman turf and stone fortification constructed in the second century AD, specifically under the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius between approximately 142 and 144 AD. This section, extending north of Cumbernauld airfield to Wyndford Road in Dunbartonshire, forms part of the wall's eastern segments and survives as upstanding earthwork remains indicative of the defensive barrier's original ditch and rampart construction. The wall stretches across central Scotland from the Firth of Clyde to the Firth of Forth, serving as the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire during its period of occupation. This particular stretch contributes to the wider archaeological and historical understanding of Roman military engineering in Britain and represents a significant phase in the Roman occupation of Scotland, predating the later Hadrian's Wall's role as the primary frontier.
