Overview

History & significance

The Antonine Wall, E edge of Strone Plantation to Girnal Hill, is a section of the Roman frontier fortification constructed across central Scotland during the second century AD. This earthwork represents part of the defensive system built under the command of Governor Quintus Lollius Urbicus around 142 AD, forming the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire at its greatest territorial extent. The surviving remains in this Dunbartonshire location consist of the characteristic ditch and rampart construction typical of the wall's engineering, though the monument has been subject to erosion and land-use changes over nearly two millennia. The section between Strone Plantation and Girnal Hill forms part of the approximately 37-mile wall running from the Firth of Clyde to the Firth of Forth, which was occupied for only some twenty to thirty years before the Romans withdrew to the frontier of Hadrian's Wall further south.

Antonine Wall, E edge of Strone Plantation to Girnal Hill is a scheduled monument protected by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM7074. View the official record →
