The Antonine Wall north of Alexander Avenue, Twechar, is a section of the turf and stone fortification constructed by the Romans in the second century AD. Built during the reign of the Emperor Antonius Pius, this frontier barrier extended across central Scotland from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde, serving as the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire. At Twechar, the wall survives as earthwork remains consisting of a rampart with a ditch to its north, characteristic of the monument's construction method using turf blocks laid on a stone foundation. The site represents a significant phase of Roman military strategy in Britain, occupied for approximately two decades in the mid-second century before the Romans withdrew to Hadrian's Wall further south.
