Overview

History & significance

The Antonine Wall north of Whitehill Avenue, Hillhead, Kirkintilloch is a surviving Roman frontier work constructed during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius in the second century AD. This section of the wall, which formed the northernmost limit of Roman Britain across central Scotland, consists of an earthen rampart with a substantial ditch to its north. The monument preserves evidence of Roman military engineering and represents part of the approximately ninety-mile defensive line established around 142 AD and largely abandoned by 180 AD. This particular stretch demonstrates the characteristic construction methods employed across the wall's length, with the ditch remaining one of the most visible features of the surviving remains.
