Overview

History & significance

Antonine Wall is a Roman frontier fortification built during the mid-second century AD under the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius. Constructed between approximately 142 and 144 AD, it represented the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire and stretched for approximately 37 miles across central Scotland from the Firth of Clyde to the Firth of Forth. At this location near St Flannan's Church in Cleddans, Dunbartonshire, the wall survives as an earthwork comprising a substantial ditch with an adjacent rampart, demonstrating the characteristic defensive construction of the barrier. The site forms part of the wider Antonine Wall system, which included a series of fortlets and auxiliary forts positioned at intervals along its length, and represents a significant testimony to Roman military engineering in Britain.
