Antonine Wall and Military Way, 515m north of Crofthead Cottage in Lanarkshire, is a section of the turf-built Roman frontier fortification constructed in the second century AD. The Antonine Wall, erected under the Emperor Antoninus Pius between approximately 142 and 143 AD, represented Rome's northernmost frontier in Britain and extended across central Scotland from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde. The Military Way, a road running parallel to the wall, facilitated troop movement and supply along the frontier. This particular stretch preserves visible earthwork remains characteristic of the wall's construction, comprising a clay and turf superstructure built upon a stone foundation, along with associated military infrastructure typical of the Roman occupation period in northern Britain.
