The Antonine Wall is a Roman fortification that forms part of the frontier system constructed across central Scotland during the second century AD. Built under the Emperor Antoninus Pius around 142 AD, it extended approximately 37 miles from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde, representing the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire at its greatest extent. The structure comprised a turf rampart built upon a stone foundation, fronted by a substantial ditch, and was garrisoned by auxiliary troops stationed at regular forts and fortlets. This particular stretch near Wester Shirva in Dunbartonshire preserves remains of the wall's characteristic profile, demonstrating the engineering methods employed across the monument's length before it was largely abandoned by the 160s AD.
