Overview

History & significance

Mollins Roman fort is a Roman auxiliary fort located in Lanarkshire, Scotland, dating to the period of Roman occupation in Britain. The fort forms part of the defensive infrastructure associated with the Antonine Wall, the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire constructed in the second century AD under the emperor Antoninus Pius. Archaeological investigation has identified the characteristic playing-card shaped plan typical of Roman forts, with evidence of ditches and ramparts that would have protected the garrison. The site represents an important example of Roman military architecture in Scotland and contributes to understanding the extent and organisation of Roman control during the Antonine period.
