Monkland Canal is a canal system constructed in the late eighteenth century to facilitate the transport of coal and iron products from the Lanarkshire coalfield to the markets of Glasgow and the Clyde. The section between Cuilhill Road and West Canal Street represents part of the original navigation that served the industrial landscape of this region. Built to connect the rich mineral resources of the Monklands area with industrial consumers downstream, the canal became an essential infrastructure for the development of Lanarkshire's heavy industries during the Industrial Revolution.
