Monkland Canal, Coatbank Street to Paddock Street, Coatbridge is a segment of the early industrial waterway system that served the coalfields and ironworks of central Lanarkshire. The canal was engineered to transport coal and iron extracted from the Scottish Coal Measures Group strata that underlie this area, allowing bulk goods to move efficiently from the mines and furnaces towards the Clyde Valley and beyond. The underlying geology—mudstone, siltstone and sandstone interbedded with coal seams and ironstone—made this locality a natural focus for industrial development during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
