Monkland Canal is a navigable waterway constructed in the late eighteenth century to transport coal and other goods from the Monklands collieries to the Forth and Clyde Canal near Glasgow. The section between Netherhouse Road and Cuilhill Road in Lanarkshire retains surviving stretches of the original canal bed, embankments, and associated infrastructure from this period of industrial development. The canal represents an important example of Scottish canal engineering and served a vital role in facilitating the exploitation and movement of mineral resources during the Industrial Revolution. Although sections have been lost to modern development, the surviving portions contribute to understanding the landscape transformation of the Monklands during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
