Overview

History & significance

The Antonine Wall is a Roman frontier fortification constructed in the 2nd century AD, specifically built under the emperor Antoninus Pius around 142 AD. This section, located in Stirlingshire between Woodhouse Eaves and Underwood Cottage, represents part of the wall's substantial linear defence system that extended across central Scotland from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde. The structure comprises a stone-built wall, originally standing approximately 3 metres in height, constructed upon a substantial earthen rampart, which remains archaeologically visible as an upstanding earthwork in the landscape. The wall functioned as the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire during its period of occupation, establishing Rome's military control over the Lowlands of Scotland until its abandonment around 160 AD.
