Overview

History & significance

Castlecary is a Roman fort situated on the Antonine Wall in Stirlingshire, Scotland, constructed during the second century AD as part of the Emperor Antoninus Pius's frontier defence system in Britain. The fort was built to garrison troops and control movement along this turf-built rampart, which stretched across the Forth-Clyde isthmus between approximately 142 and 162 AD. Archaeological investigation has revealed the characteristic layout of a Roman auxiliary fort, with evidence of substantial stone and timber structures that served administrative, military, and domestic functions during its period of occupation. The site remains a significant testament to Roman military engineering and represents one of the northernmost fortified positions of the Roman Empire.
