Craigstone Wood Castle Hill is a medieval motte in Stirlingshire, Scotland, protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland. The earthwork occupies a naturally prominent position, enhanced by the underlying geology of the site. Bedrock composed of Carboniferous to Permian-age igneous intrusion—principally dolerite and tholeiitic basalt formed during the Permian—provides a naturally resistant foundation that would have offered considerable structural stability for medieval fortification.
The motte takes advantage of the elevated topography created by this igneous outcrop, a common practice in medieval castle siting. The resistant bedrock beneath would have minimised subsidence and provided excellent drainage, factors essential for the longevity of earthwork defences. Such geological circumstances made the location strategically and practically sound for the construction of a motte, the characteristic mound-and-bailey castle type that became prevalent across Scotland during the medieval period.
