The Battle

History & Significance

Brancaster (Branodunum) on the north Norfolk coast is the northernmost of the Saxon Shore forts, positioned to intercept raiders coming around the Norfolk coast. The garrison included a cavalry regiment (Equites Dalmatae recorded in the Notitia Dignitatum) capable of pursuing raiders who landed. The fort protected the approach to the Wash estuary.
