History & Significance

After the Battle of Alford on 2 July 1645, Montrose's cavalry pursued General Baillie's routed Covenanting army across Donside. The pursuit was marred by grief over the death of Lord Gordon, Montrose's most valued cavalry commander, killed in the final charge. Despite his loss the pursuit inflicted additional casualties on the Covenanting forces.
