The Battle

History & Significance

Major-General John Desborough commanded the western district under the Major-Generals system of 1655-57. The western counties from Cornwall to Gloucestershire came under his military administration. The district was especially sensitive given the recent Penruddock rising and the continued strength of Royalist networks in the west.
