The Battle

History & Significance

Warwick's Calais garrison raided Sandwich in January 1460 and carried off the Lancastrian fleet commander Lord Rivers and his son Anthony Woodville, who were brought to Calais and mocked by the earls. The raid neutralised the royal fleet and opened the way for the Yorkist return to England in June 1460.
