History & Significance

Chelmsford was the assembly point for the Essex Royalist rising of 1648. A large force of Essex insurgents under Lord Capel, Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle gathered at Chelmsford before marching toward Colchester where they were driven into the town by Parliamentary pursuit forces.
