Farnham Castle, seat of the Bishops of Winchester, was seized by Royalists in late 1642 and retaken by Waller almost immediately. It became Parliament's main base in Surrey and Hampshire, headquarters for Waller's southern campaigns. Its retention prevented Royalist domination of the Surrey approaches to London.
