The Battle

History & Significance

James IV launched an invasion of England in support of Perkin Warbeck's claim to the English throne. He besieged Norham Castle — the same fortress that had resisted David I in 1138. Despite having artillery, James failed to take the castle quickly and withdrew when an English army approached. The episode revealed the limits of Scottish siege capability even with gunpowder artillery and foreshadowed the greater disaster of Flodden sixteen years later.
