History & Significance

Part of the Second Barons' War's opening campaign. Prince Edward captured Northampton, which had sided with de Montfort, just six weeks before the decisive Battle of Lewes reversed everything. Young Simon de Montfort escaped but Northampton was sacked. The action showed Edward's military talent even in a campaign that ended with his own father's capture.
