History & Significance

Marcus Aurelius Carausius was appointed admiral of the Channel fleet to suppress Saxon and Frankish piracy devastating the British and Gallic coasts. His operations were initially successful. However, he was accused of allowing raids to proceed and then intercepting returning pirates to seize their plunder for himself, rather than returning it to the victims. When Maximian ordered his arrest and execution, Carausius crossed to Britain and declared himself emperor.
